The joy is in the making
"Breakfast is Served", a piece I entered in Ohio Designer Craftsmen's competition "Best of 2026", at the Ohio Craft Museum in Columbus. I feel like wood is part of my DNA, having been first exposed to it in my uncle’s wood shop in my early childhood. I was always fascinated with wood – the beauty and endless variety in the grain, the color of different species, even the fragrance of the curls emerging from the plane’s throat. In my work I gravitate towards artistic expression

About The Acorn Shop
Because every oak was first an acorn The Acorn Shop is not necessarily a physical place, a clearly marked location, but rather a concept, any place where a creative activity takes place, be it in the kitchen, the garage, the back yard or park, and yes, sometimes in the woodshop. Carving a kuksa in the park Working out of the trunk of our car. Or on the kitchen counter... As an extension of that concept, the Acorn Shop Youtube channel was created, not just to encourage and ins

Warning, Kumiko is addictive!
This is the lamp I made while I was still working with the square grid lattice While writing the last post on Kumiko, I didn’t think I would be at it again – at least not so soon! But before I go any further, perhaps I need to define some terms, given that there’s so much talk about the subject, tutorials galore, people selling special jigs for cutting the angles, etc., etc. Shoji are room dividers: panels consisting of a frame with a lattice grid inside (the Kumiko) covered

Treasure Box For Eliza
One-two-three-Done! Eliza is my nephew’s daughter and in a couple of days she’ll be five years old. I decided to make a treasure box for her birthday and since I imagined that this box might end up in her toy chest, together with the rest of her toys, I thought that it should be a simple, sturdy little box that can take abuse without falling apart, and still look like a treasure box fit for a “princess”. Because of the time constraints and a five-year old’s lack of appreciat
